The founders of Fire Research Institute (FRI) recognized that scientists world-wide were communicating poorly with one another, partially because of political and sociological differences. Inspired by US President Richard Nixon's 1971 breakthrough in diplomacy with the People's Republic of China via the exchange of sports teams, FRI's mission is to further improve international relations through the exchange of scientific knowledge in the role and management of wildland fire.
